Reality Check 1

Smarties Blue Cat Commercial

· Where does this product come from? Who created it? Who owns it?
This Product comes from Nestle which is a candy company. The Product is a type of chocolate bar with rainbow colored pieces.

· How is this product distributed, shown or sold to the public? Who profits?
This product is distributed throughout the public by a series of television commercials (in link). The company, Nestle and Smarties profit off of this product.

· Who is the audience/projected consumer? What is the purpose of the product?
The audience for the advertisement seems to be projected  to young adults and children for it is a candy bar advertisement and it features a blue talking cat. The purpose of this product is to eat it.

· What is the purpose of this product? Entertainment? Information? Persuasion?
The purpose of the commercial  is to inform the viewer about the upcoming new flavor of Smarties (blue). This advertisement purseuded you to buy this product by enticing the viewer with a contest to win a Macbook Pro.

· Who is the intended (target) audience? How and why might this product appeal to its intended audience?
The Target Audience is young adults. This advertisement appeals to young adults because of the silly nature of the cat and the contest involved in the commercial for a Macbook Pro which will appeal to university students.

· How does this product appeal to you? What things do you like and dislike?
This Product does appeal to me because I find the blue, talking cat quite comical, I also like how the commercial is short and sweet to get its point across. The only thing i would change would to have the male actor say something rather then just being in the background.

· What does this product appear to be saying on a surface level?
This product is basically saying that if you buy the new blue Smarties, you could win a Macbook Pro.

· What are the values and ideology behind this product?
I don't believe theres any real values to the commercial, it seems rather light and superficial to me personally.

· Does the text present the beliefs of one particular group?
I believe the text of the commercial represents the beliefs of Smarties and Apple but not necessarily Nestle.

· What stereotypes, if any, are presented? To what effect? Do you share these beliefs?
I don't believe any stereotypes were involved in the duration of the commercial.

· What techniques are used to reach and hold the audience?
The Techniques the commercial used to reach and connect with their audience were, enticing them with a contest and by having a strange talking, blue cat. Because we are not used to seeing blue, talking cats roaming the alleyways it immediately catches our attention because it simply looks odd.
